The specialty of Ganesh Chaturthi is modak. Modak is a dumpling, which is steamed with rice flour dough along with coconut jaggery stuffing. These sweet dumplings can be served to Lord Ganesha as his favorite food as well as a dessert to the guests during the Ganesh festival occasion.

Find out what all you need to prepare Modak:

Jaggery

Rice flour

Grated Coconut

Poppy Seeds

Ghee

Steps to make Modak at home :

Step 1: First, you have to make the sweet stuffing. For that, you need to chop the jaggery and keep it aside and then grate the Coconut.
You will be needing 1 cup of jaggery and 1 cup of grated coconut.
Step 2: In a pan add 2 tablespoons of ghee and heat it well and then add ½ teaspoon of poppy seeds. Fry the poppy seeds under a low flame till it starts crackling.
Step 3: Then add 1 cup of jaggery and the freshly grated coconut to the pan and mix it well with the ghee and poppy seeds. The coconut jaggery mixture should be kept under a low flame and stir well. While you stir it well, the jaggery will melt completely.
Step 4: you need to cook the mixture well until the jaggery gets dried up and it will take about 9-10 mins for the mixture to get prepared. Remember the time limit and do not overcook the jaggery or else it will become hard.
Step 5: When the jaggery cools down, add 1 tablespoon of rice flour to the mixture and mix well. The rice flour is added to absorb the moisture from the mixture.
Step 6: Now make rice dough and keep it aside.
Step 7: Now in a pan take 2 cups of water and 2 tablespoons of ghee and ¼ tablespoon of salt and let the water boil.
Step 8: Add 1 and ½ cups of rice flour to the water and quickly stir and mix the rice flour with the water. When the rice flour gets completely mixed up with water then switch off the flame and cover the lid for about 5 minutes.
Step 9: Now keep the dough on a plate and let it cool down and knead it well and then make small tiny balls in the triangular shape and add the jaggery and coconut mixture in each of the small doughs and steam it well and your modak is ready to be served.
