Gymnema is also known as Gurmar a woody climbing plant that grows in the tropical forests of Central and Southern India. The leaves of the Gymnema plant have been used in Indian herbal medicine for centuries to regulate the body's sugar metabolism. Gymnema's hypoglycemic (blood sugar-lowering) properties have been researched since the 1920s. More recent studies have shown Gymnema to raise insulin levels gradually by regeneration of body cells in the pancreas (Baskaran 1990).
Gymnema's effectiveness is also linked to its ability to reduce cravings for sugar and restrict the body's ability to taste sweets within a few hours of taking the herb.
