This beautiful dancing Shiva depicts Shiva during his dance of destruction as he simultaneously destroys and recreates the world. His dread locked hair is spread wide depicting the violence and force of his dance as he whirls with tremendous speed destroying all in his path. The destruction Shiva leaves in his wake leads to new beginnings as life springs anew from the ashes that he leaves behind. Shiva dances on the dwarf Apasmara, who represents evil forces in the world. The dwarf is beautifully rendered. He holds a knife and a cobra. There are many cobras in this sculpture. Cobras are used to symbolize the Hindu dogma of reincarnation. Their natural process of molting or shedding their skin is symbolic of the human souls transmigration of bodies from one life to another. Nataraja also holds Agni or fire and a drum or dhamru. Nataraja is quite large standing at 6 feet tall. A stunning sculpture of Shiva as the Lord of Dance; Nataraja!
