Aoud is produced when agar trees in Southeast Asia are infected by a mold called Phialophora parasitica. The trees make the oil to protect themselves from the parasite.
The oil is then collected and stored underground for years. Because of this lengthy process, aoud is considered one of the most expensive oils in the world.
